Online class Working Skillfully with Unskillful Thoughts (an Exploration of MN 20) Dec 7, 9:00am-12:30pm (Sat) A Sati Center class Co-taught with Marjolein Janssen and Kirsten Rudestam For centuries, meditators have grappled with distraction, rumination, and obsessive thoughts during their practice. The Buddha addressed this challenge in a comprehensive discourse, offering five effective methods for skillfully managing unskillful mindstates. In this half-day program, we will look at this discourse (MN 20) and explore how to wisely apply its teachings to our thinking minds, both in meditation and daily life. We will also develop related skills, such as recognizing thoughts and effectively navigating through the five methods. For people who attend at least two of the three Sundays, there is an individual practice discussion after Mar 2. Register for Dharma Passageways Registration is open until Jan 19 only. Feb 2025

Online class The Dhamma in Brief: Preparing the Mind for Transformation March 4, 11, 18, 7:00-8:30pm (Tues) A Sati Center class The Buddha was often asked to teach “the Dhamma in brief.” His response was tailored to the asker, and often provided a basis for going off to practice in seclusion. Within the early Buddhist teachings, there is the notion that receiving just the right Dhamma teaching can trigger a deep insight or release. We may imagine this in a magical way, like a “big bang” moment or a special transmission caused by the teacher. But the suttas suggest that transformation is conditioned mostly by the actions and mindstate of the practitioner. In this class, we’ll explore some examples and scenarios of people undergoing transformation based on a brief teaching – which was preceded by some form of training or other preparation, as well as favorable circumstances in the moment of being taught. Some were monastics, and some were laypeople not so different from us. Register for The Dhamma in Brief April 2025
