Online class Fear and Fearlessness Oct 17, 24, 31, and Nov 7, 4:00-5:30pm Pacific / 7:00-8:30pm Eastern (four Thursdays) A BCBS class Co-taught with Diana Clark, Ying Chen, and David Lorey The Buddha faced immense challenges along his path to Awakening, including fear and persistent distractions. But engaging with fear leads to less fear and eventually to fearlessness. How might we learn from his experience and teachings to engage our own challenges in practice or in life? In this course, we will read suttas in which people encounter difficulties along the path, as well as suttas treating challenging topics like death. The Buddha’s compassion and wisdom come forth as he encourages skillful engagement with even the deepest difficulties – those with the potential to transform the mind. This course includes teachings, meditation, and small group discussion. Register for Fear and Fearlessness Online class The Power of Refuge Oct 29, 31, and Nov 2, 8:30-10:00am (Tues-Thurs-Sat) A Sati Center class Co-taught with Diana Clark, Ying Chen, and David Lorey Taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha often marks a significant turning point in a practitioner’s life. How do we relate to the notion of refuge, and what impact does it have on our life? This class will explore a range of ideas on refuge available in the suttas of the Pali Canon and in our practice field. We will examine the role of refuges as external support, shelter, and more importantly, how they can form a powerful inner ground and sanctuary. These refuges empower us to choose wisdom and compassion in the midst of great difficulties and agitations. This course includes teachings, meditation, and small group discussion. Although the class will not include a formal refuge-taking ceremony, we will learn the traditional chant of taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Register for The Power of Refuge December 2024 Online class Working Skillfully with Unskillful Thoughts (an Exploration of MN 20) Dec 7, 9:00am-12:30pm (Sat) A Sati Center class Co-taught with Marjolein Janssen and Kirsten Rudestam For centuries, meditators have grappled with distraction, rumination, and obsessive thoughts during their practice. The Buddha addressed this challenge in a comprehensive discourse, offering five effective methods for skillfully managing unskillful mindstates. In this half-day program, we will look at this discourse (MN 20) and explore how to wisely apply its teachings to our thinking minds, both in meditation and daily life. We will also develop related skills, such as recognizing thoughts and effectively navigating through the five methods.
